Roads

Maintaining and upgrading Calgary’s roads is essential to sustaining an efficient transportation system, and paving is a major component of these activities. To this end the City implements three types of paving:

  • Asphalt surface overlay – refers to the paving done on most City roads, and thus it is the type of paving of most interest to City residents. The system and schedule for general paving around the city is referred to as the Surface Overlay Program (see below).
  • Top lift paving - done on new roads where the top layer of asphalt is lower than the curb and gutter. Top lift paving applies another layer of asphalt to make it even with the edge of the gutter.
  • Lane paving – part of the Local Improvement Program managed by the Subdivision Development Division, and refers to paving over dirt or gravel back lanes and alleys.

Roads also oversees snow removal within city limits. For information on snow and ice control and to see where snow plows are currently located, please visit www.cocnmp.com/snic/
