October 2011 Newsletter

The Calgary Fire Department held a ceremonial ground breaking on a replacement fire station in the community of South Calgary. The replacement station will be located on 14th Street S.W., adjacent to the existing station which was built in 1952.

 “The Calgary Fire Department is committed to serving the South Calgary area, as all areas of the city, with the most appropriate fire-fighting equipment,” says Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “This replacement fire station will accommodate modern apparatus without the restrictions and limitations of the existing station, ensuring the fire service needs of this growing and evolving area are met.” Read more: October 2011 Newsletter

Police can’t be everywhere, all of the time. Calgarians are the eyes and ears police rely on – and it is important we all work together to prevent crime and keep Calgary safe.According to Statistics Canada, 69 per cent of crime goes unreported. Statistics Canada also says the most common reason Canadians didn’t report crime to police was because they “didn’t think it was important enough”. Read more: September 2011 Newsletter

Centre City Congress 2011: Thinking Big. Sharing Ideas. Working Together

As many of you know, a part of Ward 8 resides in what The City of Calgary calls our Centre City – an area that is bound by the Bow and Elbow Rivers to the north and east, and 17 Avenue South and 14 Street West. It includes Downtown, East Village, Stampede Park, East Victoria Crossing, Victoria Crossing Centre, Connaught Centre, West Connaught, West End, Eau Claire and Chinatown. A first-of-its-kind system that utilizes the water from a man-made wetland for firefighting training exercises, which is then recaptured, treated and reused has won a national environmental award.

The Calgary Fire Department has won the National Municipal Environment Award from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators for the Water Re-use Project at the Fire Training Academy in the Calgary’s southeast. “We are very pleased that we have been able to implement such an environmentally responsible and sustainable program into our operations,” said Acting Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc. “The fact that it is now attracting recognition from our counterparts across Canada is a real honour.” Read more: July 2011 Newsletter
