Sunalta is located in Calgary’s southwest, just west of downtown. Its name is likely a derivation of “Sunny Alberta.” Sunalta was developed in two phases, first in 1909 and then in 1911. The area was established as a residential community in 1912. In the 1950s, Sunalta was rezoned and redeveloped to contain a number of apartment style walkups. There are separate schools in the area.
The Sunalta community association is actively involved in addressing the concerns of this inner city neighbourhood. They have successfully fought to protect the mature poplar trees located throughout the area. The community association also works with the city to address traffic and development issues. Aside from advocacy, the community association puts on a number of special events each year, including their Pancake Breakfast, Spring Cleanup, Block Party and Christmas Party. The community centre is also active, playing host to a number of dance groups including square dancers, the Dots and Dashers, the Mountain Swingers, the Starlight Swingers and the Bow Valley Cloggers. Children’s art classes are also held at the centre. Recreational opportunities within the community include the Calgary Tennis Club and an outdoor skating rink shared with the neighbouring community of Scarboro.
